Community Co-created Distributed Manufacturing

The aim of this project is to develop a blueprint for a co-created, distributed, community-based manufacturing platform in the UK with a business model to support its financial viability and scalability. The research questions which we will address are: • What are the challenges faced by: o the local population in getting products repaired or manufactured, in getting employment and in acquiring digital skills? o local manufacturers in adopting digital manufacturing and in attracting a digitally literate workforce? o local councils in engaging communities in digital manufacturing related skill building and employment generation? • How can a community based distributed manufacturing platform be co-created to improve the perception of the local population towards manufacturing as a career choice for themselves and their children, to reskill the local community, and to cater to the repair and manufacturing demands of the local community? • What will be the characteristics of the business model, which will help in sustaining and scaling up such a co-created community-based distributed manufacturing platform?

Research methods
The project aim is to create a digital platform which matches the needs of communities for digital skills and local manufacturing with the existing capabilities available within the community to address these needs. This will be trialled as a scoping exercise, in two communities, one in the north-east of England (Durham-Middlesbrough area) and one in the East Midlands (Loughborough-Derby area), chosen because of the locations of the research team members (two in each of the locations). Data was collected using interviews and workshops.
