Could sex robots threaten livelihoods [dataset] Open Access

This study analyses the attitudes of sex workers towards sex dolls and sex robots, and explores how an increase in sex robots on the market may impact the lives and business of sex workers. It focuses primarily on whether or not the displacement of sex workers by sex robots should be a concern. An online 12-question survey was distributed to sex workers through the mailing lists of sex-worker-led unions and activist groups. The questionnaire received 31 responses from participants working in the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and Switzerland. These responses highlighted a number of key themes. Sex workers saw themselves as clearly distinct from sex robots. There were mixed views about the impact sex robots would have on the business of sex workers, but the majority did not believe there would be a significant imminent impact. Many viewed sex robots as a separate fetish and were not opposed to using such products with clients. Although there was little concern of displacement at present, there was clear evidence of concern anxiety for sex work business in the future as robot technology advances. Many claims are made about the potential advantages as well as disadvantages posed by the development of sex robots. Further research needs to be undertaken to explore these further before sex robots are sold on a larger scale.
