Dispensing Records for Diarrhoea Treatment in Mongu, Zambia [dataset] Open Access

Context: Diarrhoea is a leading cause of mortality among under-five children, particularly within the African continent where it accounts for more than 1 in 10 under-five deaths. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF recommend treatment with oral rehydration salts (ORS) and dispersible zinc tablets. Adherence to the recommended treatment (ORS + zinc) only stands at 18% in sub-Saharan Africa, due to various issues including awareness of the recommended treatment among health personnel and caregivers. As part of efforts to address the issue, in 2019 the WHO added *co-packaged* ORS and zinc to their core and children’s Essential Medicines Lists for the treatment of diarrhoea. | The dataset: The dataset is derived from dispensing records of diarrhoea treatments for under-5 children, at a number of health facilities located within Mongu district, Zambia. The records relate to two different periods: i) October 2016, when ORS and zinc were only available separately for dispensation; ii) October 2017, when an ORS+zinc co-pack was also available. The dataset is used to assess whether the dispensing behaviour of the recommended therapy (ORS+zinc) underwent a statistically significant change following the introduction of the co-pack.
