Land south of the B6318, Harlow Hill: Magnetic Gradiometry and Electrical Resistivity Tomography Survey [dataset] Open Access

Geophysical survey work was carried out at land south of the B6318, Harlow Hill, by students and staff from Durham University Earth Sciences and Archaeology Departments over four weeks between 13th June and 8th September 2022. The work formed the initial pilot study for a PhD focusing on landscape geophysics of the Vallum of Hadrian’s Wall. The surveys at Harlow Hill comprised both magnetometry survey covering three fields and a total of 29.1 hectares, and \acf{ert} with two groups of four transects. The magnetometry survey provided three main findings: firstly, features previously identified from National Mapping Program data were identified and additional detail provided, including the discovery of a roundhouse and possible trackway; secondly, the Vallum itself was shown to have only a very weak magnetic signal in this area; thirdly, one side of a small enclosure abutting Hadrian’s Wall was discovered in the gap between the Wall and the Vallum, just east of Mile Castle 16. The ERT survey confirmed the presence of surviving mound material in the eastern of the two survey groupings, supporting existing evidence from LiDAR surveys, and demonstrated the complete destruction of the mounds in the western grouping. Additionally, the presence of the in-filled Vallum ditch was demonstrated in both groupings but its morphology was not distinguished.
