MAIN DATA SET
-------------

Data for all 400 experimental runs are stored in "all image data.csv". Data were taken in ten lots ("runs") of 40 experimental runs with randomised relaxation times between 250 ms and 10 s at intervals of 250 ms. The CSV file includes the following columns:

File Reference, Relaxation Time, Thomas-Fermi Radius x, Thomas-Fermi Radius y, Cloud Position x, Cloud Position y, Relative Atom Number, Number of Vortices, σ_g, σ_ℓ, Condensate Fraction, μ_nn, a (px), Vortex Position x, Vortex Position y.

Thomas-Fermi radii and condensate fraction are recorded for each image, but the stated values are not reliable for relaxation times of one second or less due to significant distortions in cloud shape. Condensate fraction is calculated from a two-component fit.

Cloud positions are relative to a 100 x 100 region of interest in each image which is not consistent throughout the entire data set. The same region of interest is used in runs 1 and 2, runs 3 and 4, runs 5 and 6, and runs 7 to 10.

Vortex positions are in the format x1, y1, x2, y2, x3, y3, etc. If no vortices are present, the position is recorded as x1 = 0 and y1 = 0.

Distances are in pixels (px), where 1 px = 5.1 μm.

σ_ℓ values for fewer than seven vortices are listed as "NaN".
σ_g values are recorded for fewer than seven vortices, but note that we do not consider these in our analysis. σ_g is set to "NaN" when there are fewer than two vortices present.

Images that were excluded from the analysis due to ambiguous vortex detection have the following file references:
run 1 09Feb103, run 1 09Feb78, run 2 09Feb155, run 2 09Feb130, run 3 09Feb172, run 3 09Feb189, run 3 09Feb186, run 4 09Feb222, run 6 10Feb93, run 8 10Feb157, run 9 10Feb203, run 9 10Feb194, run 10 10Feb247.

The plots in figures 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10 can be reproduced using data within this file. The labelled vortex positions in figures 2 and 4 can also be extracted from this file.

FIGURE 1

"Figure 1b.csv" contains data from the modelled hybrid trap potential featured in Fig. 1(b).

"Figure 1c.csv" contains position data used in Fig. 1(c) along with time data associated with each plotted point.

FIGURE 2

Raw unprocessed images used in Fig. 2 are located in the folder "Figure 2 raw images". Each processed image is composed of an "a" file (shadow image of atoms in the probe beam), a "b" file (probe light only), and a "c" file (dark background image). The files are named "aRb_2015_*.asc", "bRb_2015_*.asc", and "cRb_2015_*.asc", respectively, where * is the file reference that can be matched to the extracted data in "all image data.csv".

FIGURE 3

The processed image used in this figure has the file reference 'run 5 10Feb45', and the raw image is in the folder "Figure 2 raw images".

FIGURE 4

Raw unprocessed images used in Fig. 4 are located in the folder "Figure 4 raw images", and are in the same format as those in "Figure 2 raw images".

FIGURE 5

The raw unprocessed images displayed in Fig. 5 are located in this folder in the same format as above. The 12 images used in this plot have the following file references:
run 8 10Feb160, run 9 10Feb188, run 3 09Feb170, run 5 10Feb42, run 10 10Feb238, run 7 10Feb129, run 1 09Feb81, run 7 10Feb122, run 5 10Feb30, run 2 09Feb128, run 3 09Feb187, run 2 09Feb118.

FIGURE 6

Data for Fig. 6(a) and (b) can be found in "Figure 6 a and c data.csv". It contains the means and standard deviations for σ_g and σ_ℓ with their associated noise widths.

Theoretical vortex distributions and their associated fitted lattices, along with the calculated σ_g and σ_ℓ for each distribution are stored in "Figure 6 c data.csv". This file contains the following columns:

Noise width, σ_g, σ_ℓ, vortex positions, fitted lattice positions.

Vortex positions are in the format x1, y1, x2, y2, etc. Fitted lattice positions are listed in the same way.
